Global Water Clarity Project

Help map water clarity and particulate patterns using simple smartphone images.

Citizen science - water.jpg

Science Background

Water clarity is influenced by suspended particles and how they interact with light. These particles affect scattering, brightness, and visual texture in water.

This project uses image-based analysis to study these visual patterns and relate them to environmental conditions such as location and weather.

Image-Based Turbidity Analysis in Natural Water Systems: A Scalable Smartphone Framework

Step 01
Take a photo of a water sample (tap, river, lake, ocean)
Step 02
Upload it with basic information to our database
Step 03
Contribute to global environmental research and mapping

Simple Capture Tips

  • Take photo from above looking directly into the water
  • Use a simple, solid background if possible for clarity
  • Avoid reflections and glare on the water surface
