Water is one of the most fundamental resources on Earth, yet understanding what is actually present in the water around us is often surprisingly difficult. Traditional environmental testing typically relies on laboratory equipment, specialized instruments, and complex analytical workflows. While these approaches are powerful, they are also expensive and infrequent, leaving large gaps in environmental monitoring.

ecotera home was created to help close that gap.

Our goal is simple: make environmental testing more accessible by transforming everyday technology into practical sensing tools. Modern smartphones contain high-resolution cameras, advanced processors, and powerful computational capabilities. By combining these tools with carefully designed environmental assays, it becomes possible to observe environmental signals that previously required laboratory equipment.

EcoExposure™ is the first system developed within the Ecotera Home platform. The system combines simple test reagents with smartphone imaging and computational analysis to reveal signals in water samples that may otherwise go unnoticed. This approach enables environmental testing to occur in homes, field sites, rivers, coastal areas, and many other real-world environments.

The idea is not to replace laboratory science, but to expand the amount of observation that can occur between laboratory studies. When more people are able to observe environmental conditions, it becomes easier to understand how contamination moves through ecosystems and how water quality changes over time.

Environmental monitoring is becoming increasingly important as new contaminants are discovered in water systems around the world. These include microplastics, heavy metals, industrial chemicals, and other emerging pollutants. Many of these substances are difficult to track because they occur in complex environmental mixtures and may vary significantly between locations.

By enabling more frequent observation of environmental samples, smartphone-based sensing systems can help communities, researchers, and environmental organizations collect more data and identify potential issues earlier.

ecotera home is focused initially on water monitoring, but the broader vision includes environmental observation across multiple ecosystems. Soil, sediments, and environmental surfaces may also contain contaminants that are difficult to observe without specialized tools. Expanding environmental sensing capabilities beyond the laboratory opens new opportunities for research, citizen science, and community-driven environmental stewardship.

The long-term vision is a global network of environmental observations—where individuals, researchers, and communities contribute to a growing understanding of environmental conditions around the world.

Environmental awareness begins with observation. By making observation easier, we hope to help expand the data needed to protect the environments we all depend on.
